Dr. J. Barry Burgess, DMD
Dr. Barry Burgess is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology; and then went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (DMD) from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry.
After graduating from dental school, Dr. Burgess completed his pediatric dentistry residency at the Indiana University School of Dentistry and Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. Burgess is board certified and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He founded North River Pediatric Dental (now known as Children & Teen Dental) in 1981.
He enjoys fishing, hunting, skiing, and reading; and loves traveling with his daughters—Alleigh, Emileigh, and Annika.
Dr. Richard A. Simpson, DMD
Dr. Richard A. Simpson earned his B.S. from Auburn University, and his DMD from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1987. He completed a one-year Advanced Educational Program in General Dentistry with the US Army in 1988. After six years of active military service, he completed a two-year residency in Pediatric and Hospital Dentistry at Children’s Mercy Hospital and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he was chief resident. In 1994 he was awarded his Fellowship in the American Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Simpson continued to serve his country through the Army Reserves and the Alabama Army National Guard, and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2002. In 2012, Dr. Simpson completed the three-year Leadership Institute of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, taught at the prestigious Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and, in 2012, he was inducted as a Fellow in to the American College of Dentists.
Dr. Simpson serves as the Alabama Academy of Pediatric Dentistry long-time liaison to the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and as the co-chair of the chapter’s oral health committee. He also serves on the Alabama Medicaid Dental Task Force, and the Alabama Dental Association (ALDA) Medicaid Advisory Committee. He is an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and served as President of the Alabama Academy of Pediatric Dentistry from 2012-2014. Dr. Simpson currently serves as the Chair of the Oral Health Coalition of Alabama.
Dr. Simpson is a recipient of the ALDA Most Excellent Fellow Designation. In 2008, Dr. Simpson was recognized by the Alabama Chapter-AAP for Excellence in Advocacy, and in 2010 by the American Academy of Pediatrics with a Special Achievement Award for Distinguished Service. Dr. Simpson was the 2015 national recipient of the AAP Oral Health Service Award. In September 2016, Dr. Simpson was awarded the “Alabama Dental Association Dentist Citizen of the Year Award” for his state level efforts in child advocacy and inter-professional collaboration for pediatric oral health. In May 2017, Dr. Simpson was a recipient of the DentaQuest National “Health Equity Heroes” award.
Dr. Simpson is happily married to Jan (Breugem), a Tuscaloosa native, and they have two children, Connor (Sumerlin) and Zoey. He is an Eagle Scout and a long time volunteer with the Boy Scouts, an active member of First Wesleyan Church, and he enjoys fitness training, obstacle course racing, and the outdoors.
